Speed Boat (9)
Trailer (9)Last month began a three-month series of columns on fiberglass fundamentals with a discussion of the general fiberglass boat-building process and common resins used. This month I'll discuss the layup procedures and reinforcing materials used. Sprayup vs. Hand Layup There are basically two ways to combine and apply resin and reinforcements to the mold surfaces, regardless of the resin used.
These are the "sprayup" or so-called "chopper gun" layup, and contact molding or handlayup. With sprayup laminates, a continuous fiberglass yam or roving is fed into a chopper gun. The gun chops the rovings into pieces, mixes them with resin, then deposits the combination onto the mold surface. This composition then gets rolled out to the desired thickness....
